The airplane in the 1920's
Invented only a decade and a half before, traveling by air was an uncharted territory during the "roaring twenties". More a novelty item than a way of travel in prior years, the airplane got its big break in the 1920's. With pilots such as Emilia Erhart making flying a popular sport almost to watch, urban america's interest in aviation grew rapidly.
With the attention of the US captivated by this new phenomenon of flight, lots of research had been started to explore the idea of using aviation as a regular transportation. Although expensive and rare, commercial flights did happen on a semi regular basis in the 1920's. The main use for planes however, was more that of delivering mail and military usage.
